The Educator Development Institute (EDI) is a state-approved alternate route to certification that provides an affordable, high-quality pathway to teaching through a three-year residency.
Greater Detroit Teacher Residency Program
The Teacher Residency Program through New Paradigm For Education's EDI is a State of Michigan approved alternate route to certification program that will provide an affordable, high-quality pathway to teaching through a three-year residency. The program will offer an innovative and scaffolded approach to training and retaining high quality teachers, particularly teachers of color and male teachers of color while offering financial incentives to reduce barriers for candidates.
NPFE Residents will engage in summer training that builds their teaching foundation. Depending on their level of experience entering the Residency, Residents will spend their first year either serving as either a classroom teacher or a tutor. On either path, Residents engage in training and clinical practice with support from coaches, principals, and directors. They will work with students as full time New Paradigm For Education employees, attend seminars, and study for the MTTC. During years two and three, candidates will continue to hone their instructional skills through seminars, professional development, professional learning communities, and coaching.
After passing the required Michigan Tests for Teacher Certification (MTTC), Residents will be recommended for Interim Certification. Full participation in the Residency, including full participation in all coursework, mentoring and professional development, as well as completion of your job responsibilities, is required to maintain the Interim Certification. After three years of successful teaching with the Interim Certification, candidates will be recommended for standard certification. In the fourth and fifth years, individuals continue to provide a high-quality education to students within New Paradigm For Education schools and continue to be supported through observation, feedback and professional development.
NPFE Residents make a 5-year commitment to work with NPFE in order to have the cost of the program fully covered by NPFE.
